WEIGHT LOSS INJECTIONS

You may have seen in the news that GPs are now able to prescribe weight loss injections. However, our local Integrated Care Board (ICB)—which determines what can be prescribed in Leicestershire—has not yet signed up to this initiative. It is unlikely to be available before August.

We kindly ask that you do not book an appointment to discuss this at this time, as we are currently unable to offer any support until the scheme is formally approved.

Water Pump installed in Africa as part of our collaboration with AquAid Water Coolers

As part of our collaboration with AquAid, we are beyond pleased that a new water pump known as an Elephant Pump has been installed in Manicaland - a province in the north-eastern highlands of Zimbabwe. This has been funded through the purchase of our water cooler located in the waiting room.

An Elephant Pump can deliver up to 10,000 litres of potable water per day, providing for the needs of over 300 people – and will do so reliably for decades.

These pumps are built by an experienced team leader from The Africa Trust, working alongside the local community and making use of materials that are locally sourced and readily available. This approach not only empowers the community but also makes it far easier for them to carry out repairs when needed - significantly extending the pump’s operational life.

Cervical Screening

Helping women and anyone with a cervix to understand how cervical screening can help to detect and prevent cervical cancer.

We know that for many cervical screening isn’t always an easy process, but our screening nurses are highly experienced and can help to make the quick lifesaving procedure comfortable for you. Currently 1 in 4 women do not attend their screening appointment, whatever the reason we’re here to support women to get their cervical screening when invited.

Cervical screenings are estimated to save 5,000 lives a year in the UK, so it’s important to remember that however you get screened it’s the best way to prevent cervical cancer. If it helps you to book and come along to your first or overdue screening there are lots of things that can be done to help make you feel comfortable such as playing music, reading a book, meditating, or bringing along a friend for support our nurses will help with anything else that helps to make you feel at ease.

Do the one thing that will help to detect cervical cancer - screening takes less than ten minutes, and it could save your life.

RSV image

RSV Vaccine

RSV Vaccine

From 1 September 2024, those who turn 75 and those age 75 to 79 will be eligible for a free vaccine to protect them from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

RSV is an infectious disease of the airways and lungs. RSV infection often causes symptoms similar to a cold, including:

  • cough
  • sore throat
  • sneezing
  • a runny or blocked nose

It can also make you become wheezy or short of breath and lead to pneumonia and other life-threatening conditions. There is no specific treatment, and most infections will get better by themselves. Every year thousands of older adults need hospital care for RSV, and some of them will die. RSV can be more severe in people with medical conditions such as heart or lung disease or a weakened immune system.

RSV infection is common in young children but is most serious for small babies and for older people.

We will contacting eligible patients in the next week or so to offer them an appointment.

You can find out more information about RSV and the vaccination by clicking here

Active practice Cert

We are very proud to announce we have been awarded Active Practice status by the Royal College of General Practitioners.

The team headed up by our practice champion Luke Barnett have worked really hard to achieve this status and you may have seen some of our team out on a short walk for our "walk your break" initiative.

What is an Active Practice?

The Active Practices Charter is an initiative by The Royal College of GPs and Sport England to inspire GP practices to commit to increasing activity and reducing sedentary behaviour in both staff and patients.

We are all aware of the benefits of being more active so to prove to patients that we really do mean what we say, we took the steps to become accredited.  Luke, who works in our reception team, has really encouraged us all to get out walking and has been instrumental in achieving this accreditation.

If you would like to find out any further information about any of the Active Together groups that are available in our area, please call into the surgery to check out our notice board and/or ask to speak with Luke.  Luke works Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.
